Do you want help managing stress and anxiety? Psychotherapy can make us more aware of our behaviour and thoughts, but we also need to ground ourselves physically. We will focus on calming the fight/flight response, stimulating the vagus nerve and reducing cortisol so that you leave the class feeling calm and centred. This can help if you have suffered trauma, are in menopause, or want some mental space.
I teach a slow, mindful form of hatha yoga, with a focus on breathing. We will do simple meditations and visualisations with mudras (hand gestures) and a guided relaxation. By focusing on our body and breath we can slow our thoughts down. I draw on my yoga practice, counselling training and reading about trauma/depression and the body (e.g. Bessel van Der Kolk and Amy Weintraub).
Who can do this class?
This class is suitable for all ages and abilities and you can rest if needed. It could help anyone with a chronic pain or health condition to reconnect with their body in a positive way. Yoga helped me overcome fear of movement after a long-term back problem.
Do I need to commit?
Booking is either for a course of 5 classes paid in advance. Or you can drop in for £15. I recommend you attend a course initially as it takes time for your body to learn to unwind and see the benefit. Missed classes will not be refunded.

My yoga journey
I started yoga aged 17 at school and came back to it when doing a stressful job in London and noticed how I felt calmer and stronger.
I was introduced to the spiritual side – meditation and chanting – on an ashram in India in 2000 and did yoga teacher training there.
I qualified as a counsellor in 2018 and mostly do counselling now. But my yoga and meditation practice is an antidote to the intense focus of counselling. I know from my own experience how important it is to look after my physical and emotional wellbeing and will offer the techniques that I use in this class.
